Animals in Phylum Chordata are in the Phylum Cordata because they all have a notochord, nerve chord, tail and pharyngeal pouches at some point in their lives. Vertebraes are distinguished from the non-vertebraes in Phylum Chordata because they only have those features during the embryonic development.
